Nobody wants to think about the possibility of losing a love one. For this reason, many individuals fear and avoid facing this idea when planning to meet with a lawyer to discuss the estate planning process. A recent story about one family in California highlights the importance of having plans in place if the unimaginable were to happen to a family member.
About two years ago one woman's sister-in-law went kicking and screaming to meet with a lawyer to make estate planning decisions incase her or her husband were to get sick or die. She was ever resistant to the process because she believed taking part in the estate planning process only makes bad things happen. She believed in karma. However, the more she thought about it coupled with that fact that her husband's family had a history of heart troubles and weight problems motivated her to start planning for the future.
So, despite her initial objections, the both of them met with a lawyer. She ultimately found the estate planning process was not as bad as she thought despite the unpleasant subject matter. She described it as going to the dentist, it may be unpleasant at times but it's necessary.
What would happen next would rock their world. Only a short time after meeting with an attorney to discuss estate planning, the woman's husband got ill and was diagnosed with a condition called primary amloidosis, a deadly and rare medical condition. Only 47 days after being diagnosed, her husband died.
The man's sister reflected in a recent article that her brother was happy and comforted to know that his wife would not have the financial and estate concerns to add to her burdens once he passed.
This is just one true story highlighting the importance of having plans in place for the passing of a loved one despite the sometimes unpleasant nature of these topics.
